Organizations have called on Germany and the EU to provide better protection for women and children fleeing. Women and children from Ukraine in particular are threatened by sexualised violence.
On the occasion of International Women’s Day, numerous organizations called for special protection for women and children from Ukraine.
“For women and girls, war and the associated displacement and flight always mean the threat of sexualized violence, which is a phenomenon of all armed conflicts worldwide,” said a statement by more than 40 women’s and non-governmental organizations.
The signatory organizations – including the German Women’s Council, Pro Asyl and the Central Information Center for Autonomous Women’s Shelters – called on Germany and the EU to support and expand the work of women’s rights organizations and shelters.
“Putin’s war of aggression is directed against freedom, self-determination and equality and thus against all democrats,” said Federal Minister for Family Affairs Anne Spiegel (Greens). “With a view to International Women’s Day, that means for me to stand up for freedom regardless of gender.”
More than 1.7 million people have fled their homes
According to the UN refugee agency UNHCR, more than 1.7 million people have fled since the Russian invasion of Ukraine began. It is mainly women and children who are fleeing Ukraine. The government in Kyiv has banned Ukrainian men between the ages of 18 and 60 from leaving the country; they are subject to military service.
International Women’s Day is celebrated annually on March 8th and dates back to the women’s movement that demanded equal rights and women’s suffrage more than 100 years ago. In Russia it is a holiday on which women are traditionally given flowers.
