In a Twitter video, Tobias Hans gets upset about the current petrol prices – and raises serious allegations against “the state”. He calls for a “fuel price brake”.
Saarland Prime Minister and CDU top candidate for the upcoming state elections, Tobias Hans, has drawn criticism for statements about high energy costs. On Tuesday morning, Hans posted a short video via the short message service Twitter, which he had apparently taken himself in front of a gas station. In it he calls the price of 2.12 euros for a liter of diesel “really crazy”.
Tobias Hans accuses the state of enrichment
Of course, this has to do with the Ukraine crisis and with things that the federal government cannot influence, he added. “But the problem is simply that the state is enriching itself at the moment. The state is enriching itself from these increased energy costs, and that’s why a fuel price brake has to be put in place.”

This statement caused controversy. “As an MP, he should know that #taxes finance our democracy,” said Saarland’s top candidate for the Greens, Lisa Becker, on Twitter.
Hans was also criticized for speaking of low earners and “hardworking people” in a passage. “This not only affects low earners, it really affects the many hard-working people who have to fill up, who fill up their diesel vehicles, who drive to work, who take the children to sports,” said Hans in the video. A new state parliament will be elected in Saarland on March 27th.
