According to data from the Federal Statistical Office, German defense spending rose from 28.5 billion euros in 1991 to 38.7 billion euros in 2021.
Defense spending in Germany has increased by a good third over the past 30 years.
However, the share of defense spending in total government spending has almost halved since 1991. This emerges from data from the Federal Statistical Office, which was published in Wiesbaden.
In 1991, the Federal Republic – in current prices – spent 28.5 billion euros on it, in 2021 it was 38.7 billion euros. However, according to the results of the national accounts, total government spending rose more sharply in the same period: from 736.9 billion euros to 1,838.2 billion euros. Defense spending during this period had the second-slowest increase of any government function – after housing and community services. Defense spending as a percentage of total government spending fell from 3.9 percent in 1991 to 2.1 percent in 2021.
The statisticians also looked abroad. However, international comparative figures are only available for 2020. At that time, Germany’s share of defense spending in total state spending was 2.2 percent, below the European Union average of 2.5 percent. Latvia achieved the highest share within the EU with 5.9 percent. France also had an above-average share with 3.1 percent, while Ireland had the lowest share with 0.9 percent.
