Since the beginning of the war, Ukraine has been asking the West for warplanes to defend itself against Russian airstrikes. However, this is considered extremely delicate. According to military expert Carlo Masala, this could lead to an escalation of the conflict.
According to military expert Carlo Masala, Poland’s delivery of fighter jets to Ukraine could lead to an escalation of the conflict with Russia. Masala said in the new star-Podcast “Ukraine – The Situation”, the machines of the type MiG 29 are militarily important, but “not a game changer” – they would not change anything about Russia’s military superiority over Ukraine. “You have to think carefully about whether to supply weapons that carry the risk of escalation,” warned the politics professor from the Bundeswehr University in Munich on Wednesday.
Poland had offered to hand over machines from its air force to the United States, which could then forward them. However, the US Department of Defense denied this. Referring to the plans, Masala asked: “What are they flying over? Where are they flying from? How do Ukrainian pilots get to the planes?” He also criticized the fact that NATO had not agreed on a unified position. After all, all NATO countries would ultimately be equally affected by an intensification of the conflict.
Masala: Skeptical about escape routes in Ukraine
Masala expressed skepticism about the evacuation of Ukrainian civilians from embattled cities. “The question is what the escape routes look like,” he said. There are reports that there are small, explosive mines lying around that look like toys, so-called butterfly mines. “The risk is that children will take them in.” Such weapons are militarily irrelevant and only serve to “terrorize the population”.

In addition, not everyone has the opportunity to leave the cities. But those who stay behind must fear that Russia will then declare them combatants and thus a legitimate target of acts of war.
In the first episode of the podcast on Tuesday, Masala referred to the experience in Syria, where Russian forces first enabled civilians to flee and then launched destructive attacks.
