Pandemic: Kretschmann calls the federal government’s corona plans “grossly negligent”

Criticism of the federal government’s Corona plans for the next few months is getting louder. Winfried Kretschmann sees the scope for action of the federal states too severely curtailed.

Baden-Württemberg’s Prime Minister Winfried Kretschmann (Greens) has accused the federal government of gross negligence in the further fight against the pandemic. The Green politician criticized the traffic light government’s plans for corona protection for the next few months.

It is about a new legal basis with which crisis measures should continue to be possible at regional or state level after the end of most of the drastic everyday restrictions targeted by the federal and state governments on March 20th. From Kretschmann’s point of view, the federal states have far too few instruments at hand. “The pandemic situation is very volatile, the numbers are currently rising again,” Kretschmann told the German Press Agency on Wednesday. “That’s why I think it’s grossly negligent if the federal government hands over effective instruments for emergencies without need.”

Kretschmann: “It’s a rump frame”

Above all, wearing masks remains central as a very effective means, said Kretschmann – but it will be massively curtailed according to the draft. «This is not an effective basic catalogue, but a skeleton framework. For this purpose, a quick-fix procedure is imposed on us here that leaves the countries outside.” If the infection process gains momentum again, then the new Infection Protection Act provides for an “extremely complicated hotspot concept”. The countries have little scope for quick, effective intervention. However, the speed of reaction is the decisive factor for successfully controlling the pandemic.

According to a draft that became known on Wednesday, on which Health Minister Karl Lauterbach (SPD) and Justice Minister Marco Buschmann (FDP) have agreed, mask and test requirements should continue to apply as basic measures beyond the beginning of spring. More comprehensive measures should be possible in “hotspots” with a more critical situation. The federal and state governments had decided that all more in-depth everyday restrictions should be lifted by March 20th.
