Ukraine War: 11-year-old boy flees alone with only two bags

It is the individual fates in particular that show the terrible effects of the Ukraine war on the population. One of the examples: An 11-year-old boy who had to flee on his own.

Two small bags, a passport and a relative’s phone number: That’s all Hassan (11) had with him when he had to flee the Ukraine and arrived in Slovakia after about 1200 kilometers.

War in Ukraine: Young Ukrainian flees all alone to Slovakia

As the Slovakian Ministry of the Interior wrote on Facebook, Hassan had to flee all by himself because both his parents had to stay in Ukraine. In a short video, Hassan’s mother then explained why he had to make the long journey alone: she had to take care of her own mother because she couldn’t move on her own. In their home country, the Russian forces would also attack a power plant. She then decided to put him on a train and take him to safety.

The escape went relatively well for Hassan: He was taken in on site, brought to a warm place and provided with food and drink. According to the BBC, Slovakian officials received him. They described him as a “real hero” and said he won everyone straight away with his smile.

Hassan also met the Slovak Interior Minister Roman Mikulec. Mikulec said that Hassan and his siblings have already applied for temporary protection in Slovakia.
