Letter to ex-Chancellor: Ten SPD leaders: Schröder should distance himself from Putin

Gerhard Schröder has long been criticized for his closeness to Vladimir Putin. Now the current and eight former party leaders have turned to the ex-Chancellor.

SPD chairmen Saskia Esken and Lars Klingbeil and eight former SPD leaders have called on former Chancellor Gerhard Schröder (SPD) to distance himself from Kremlin boss Vladimir Putin.

“Act and say clear words,” says the letter, which the editorial network Germany reports on and which is available from the German Press Agency. In view of the war in Ukraine, it is now a matter of “unmistakably opposing President Putin’s warlike actions”.

The letter goes on to say: “Many people look at you. And you decide yourself these days, dear Gerhard, whether you want to remain a respected social democrat in the future. » If Schröder does not make a statement publicly, one will express oneself “in this sense”, the current and former party leaders wrote on March 3, as has now become known. Norbert Walter-Borjans, Andrea Nahles, Martin Schulz, Kurt Beck, Franz Müntefering, Matthias Platzeck, Rudolf Scharping and Björn Engholm also signed. Former SPD leaders Sigmar Gabriel and Oskar Lafontaine, who switched to the Left Party, did not sign.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) and the SPD leadership had already asked the former head of government and party leader to vacate his posts at Russian state-owned companies because of the Russian attack on Ukraine. So far, nothing has been known about a response from Schröder.
