Kyiv deserves a “clear EU perspective”, says SPD foreign policy expert Michael Roth. Putin compares Roth to Scrooge McDuck: He’s sitting on a safe but can’t do anything with the money.
The head of the Foreign Affairs Committee in the Bundestag, Michael Roth (SPD), has spoken out in favor of a “clear EU perspective” for Ukraine. “She deserves it,” said Roth on Deutschlandfunk before a special EU summit in Versailles.
“Ukraine now wants to be part of the EU very quickly, that won’t work,” said Roth. “But the first step must be taken now.”
The road to the EU is long, since, among other things, standards of legislation, the judiciary and the social market economy have to be established. “There can be no special rules.” Roth advocated sending a clear but honest signal for an EU perspective. “That would really be a quantum leap.” But it won’t be quick. Roth admitted that there were EU states that no longer wanted further enlargement.
Roth: Putin has safe like Scrooge McDuck
In the short term, he could imagine that there would actually be a European economic area including Ukraine. “The most important thing seems to me that Ukraine now gets the signal: she’s coming.”
Roth expressed skepticism about a possible energy embargo against Russia. Liberation from dependence on Russian energy will not happen overnight unless major economic damage is accepted.
Russia’s President Vladimir Putin already has his back to the wall, and in a few weeks the economy in his country will have reached the subsistence level. Roth denied that the West was filling Russia’s war chest with energy imports. “Putin already has 600 billion euros in a safe like Scrooge McDuck, but he can no longer do anything with the money. The sanctions are helping to cut off Putin and the Russian economy,” said Roth.
