Russian invasion: US general doubts benefit of more fighter jets for Ukraine

A US general warns that the discussed transfer of MiG-29s to Ukraine could result in an escalation between Russia and NATO. The Ukrainians made excellent use of their weapons.

The supreme commander of US forces in Europe contradicts Ukrainian statements about the benefits of a possible delivery of MiG-29 fighter jets.

“The transfer of MiG-29 aircraft will not significantly increase the effectiveness of the Ukrainian Air Force,” said General Tod D. Wolters. The Ukrainian Air Force currently has numerous operational aircraft that fly daily. It is unlikely that additional jets would increase effectiveness.

In addition, Wolters emphasized that according to intelligence services, the transfer of MiG-29s could be misunderstood by Moscow and could result in an escalation between Russia and NATO. This is a high-risk scenario, the four-star general said.

Ukrainian Ambassador: Need jets ASAP

Shortly before, the Ukrainian ambassador in Berlin, Andriy Melnyk, had again pushed for a delivery of MiG-29 fighter jets. “The fact is that we need these planes as soon as possible to protect the airspace,” he told the German Press Agency.

Russia bombed houses, hospitals and schools. “If the planes were handed over to Ukraine, it would not mean NATO entered the war. We hope to have positive news on this in the next few days.”

Wolters, on the other hand, said they believe the most effective way to support the Ukrainian military is to provide more anti-tank and anti-aircraft systems. “Ukrainians are now making excellent use of these weapons,” he commented.

Limited effectiveness of Russian air forces

Although Russia’s air force capabilities are significant, their effectiveness remains limited due to Ukrainian strategic, operational and tactical ground-based air defense systems.

The background to Wolters’ statements is Poland’s proposal, rejected by the United States, to make MiG-29 combat aircraft available for use by the Ukrainian armed forces. Poland wanted to bring its MiG-29s to the US air base Ramstein in Rhineland-Palatinate and the US should then make them available to Ukraine.
