Ukraine: Michael Mittermeier in the podcast “Today Important” about humor in times of war

Bad news from the war in Ukraine reaches us every day. How do people deal with it whose job it is to make others laugh? Comedian Michael Mittermeier talks about this in the current episode of the podcast “important today”.

“I’m an entertainer and that includes the word attitude,” says comedian and author Michael Mittermeier about himself and his art. The 55-year-old is one of the most successful comedians in Germany and has won quite a few awards. Now his new book, “Just one more episode! Television from A to Zapped,” is out at a time when most people don’t feel like laughing. As a comedian, how do you deal with a situation like this when a terrible war is raging around you? For Mittermeier, the answer seems to be clear, although he says there is “no blanket solution” and that every artist has to decide for himself how to deal with it, he is certain: “You can make humor.”

“If I make a joke, I say it out of respect”

Mittermeier sees humor and entertainment as an opportunity for people “to get their thoughts out a bit”. And in episode 230 he found only words of praise for his former entertainment colleague and current Ukrainian President in “Today important”: “Zelenskyj did the best stand-up to Putin that was ever done.” The father of a family also finds clear words for his critics and colleagues, who claim that one shouldn’t say anything more today: Anyone who claims that should “go home and become a baker”. After more than 30 years in show business, Mittermeier may have aged on the outside, but he hasn’t lost any of his attitude and commitment. Even if he is aware that he might not do some things the same way he did thirty years ago. However, the comedian keeps one thing in mind and that is “always a bit of happiness in the heart”.

Emotional victories of Ukraine at the Paralympics

The war in Ukraine is also casting its shadow over the Beijing Paralympic Games, which end this Sunday. Putin tramples on the Olympic Truce. He is waging war against Ukraine while China is hosting the Paralympics. The editors of “Today Important” spoke to Marco Maier, who is currently celebrating his successful debut at the Paralympic Games. He has already won two silver medals, in biathlon and cross-country skiing. In an interview, he says that the athletes only have limited opportunities to protest. “But of course we can do it at the finish. After my first silver medal, I made the peace sign, that is, the peace sign, on the cameras.”

Everyone would have welcomed the fact that Belarus and Russia were excluded from the games. Because it was the only signal “that we could send to the world in para-sport that we don’t agree with this situation in Ukraine either”. Maier also describes what the Paralympics mean for athletes from Ukraine. That they wanted to send signals home and that they would fight as a unit here on a second front, so to speak. “Every medal won by Ukraine was won very emotionally.”
