Asia: India ‘accidentally’ fires missile at Pakistan

The Indian government wants to investigate the launch of a missile to Pakistan. The neighboring country hit has meanwhile summoned the Indian chargé d’affaires.

India accidentally fired a missile at Pakistan, according to government sources. The reason was a technical breakdown during routine maintenance work, said the Ministry of Defense in New Delhi.

The incident is therefore deeply regrettable, but it is also a relief that there were no fatalities in the accident on Wednesday. The Indian government has ordered an investigation.

Criticism from the Pakistani Foreign Ministry

India and Pakistan are nuclear powers and neighboring countries. Their relationship is very strained. Both were formerly part of the British colonial empire – with independence in 1947 this was split into the two countries. They have ongoing disputes over control of the Kashmir region in the Himalayas on their border. They have also waged several wars against each other.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Pakistan spoke on Thursday of an unprovoked violation of Pakistani airspace “with a flying supersonic object of Indian origin” and summoned India’s charge d’affairs to Islamabad. The flying supersonic object destroyed civilian property and endangered aircraft in Pakistani airspace, which could have led to a terrible accident, the ministry said.
