Ukraine war: Because of sanctions – Russia warns of the crash of the ISS

How much do Western sanctions against Russia affect the operations of the ISS space station? The head of the Russian space agency Roskosmos, Dmitry Rogozin, has now warned the West of a crash of the International Space Station ISS. Rogozin said on Saturday in the messenger service Telegram that the sanctions imposed on Russia are affecting the operation of the Russian spacecraft that supply the ISS. This primarily affects the Russian part of the station, which is responsible for course corrections. As a result, the 500-ton structure could fall to the ground and “fall into the sea or onto land.”

“The Russian segment ensures that the station’s orbit is corrected (11 times a year on average), also to avoid space debris,” Rogozin explained. He also published a world map to show where the ISS could crash. Russia is therefore largely safe.

Russia also transports crew members and supplies to the ISS with Soyuz space capsules and Progress space freighters. On March 30, US astronaut Mark Vande Hei and two Russian colleagues are scheduled to return to Earth from the ISS on board a Soyuz space capsule.

According to Rogozin, the operation of the launchers is now subject to US, EU and Canadian sanctions. According to Roskosmos, it has already appealed to NASA and the European and Canadian space agencies ESA and ASC to lift the sanctions.
