Russian invasion: Another big peace demonstration in Berlin against the war in Ukraine

Thousands again took part in a peace demonstration in Berlin. The motto of the demonstration was: «Stop the war. Peace and solidarity for the people of Ukraine».

Thousands of people once again took to the streets in Berlin at a large peace demonstration against Russia’s war in Ukraine.

They gathered on Sunday afternoon at Alexanderplatz and walked towards the Brandenburg Gate. The demonstration continued to attract large numbers of people even after it had started. A specific number of participants has not yet been determined.

Young and old were among the demonstrators, and families with children also took part. Some had balloons in blue and yellow, the colors of Ukraine. Others carried self-described banners with inscriptions such as “Stop War”, “Peace”, “Where is the vaccination against war” and insults against Russian President Vladimir Putin. 550 police officers were on duty. The mood was peaceful, most of the participants wore corona masks.

On February 27, three days after the start of the war, more than 100,000 people demonstrated in Berlin. An alliance of organizers made up of trade unions, churches, environmental protection initiatives and peace groups had again announced so many participants for Sunday. The motto of the demonstration was: «Stop the war. Peace and solidarity for the people of Ukraine». In Hamburg, Frankfurt, Stuttgart and Leipzig, too, people wanted to take to the streets against the war.

35,000 people demonstrated in Stuttgart

In bright sunshine, around 35,000 people gathered in Stuttgart for a peace demonstration against the war in Ukraine. With signs “Stand with Ukraine”, “Stop Putin, stop war” and “Russia out of Ukraine” they protested at the Upper Palace Garden in front of the opera house, which was decorated with a large Ukraine flag, against Russia’s invasion of the country. Many people held Ukraine flags and flags with peace doves or the peace sign in their hands.

“Many more people came than expected,” said a spokeswoman for a co-organizer, the BUND Baden-Württemberg Nature Conservation Union.
