Despite the increased hopes of a negotiated solution, military expert Carlo Masala expects increased attacks by Russian forces in Ukraine in the coming days. Masala says on Monday in star-Podcast “Ukraine – The Situation”: “It looks like we may be facing another offensive.”

He is in favor of the West treating Russia with a mixture of toughness and a sense of proportion. “You shouldn’t cross a certain threshold. But the Ukrainian armed forces also have momentum now,” says the professor from the Bundeswehr University in Munich. They would continue to hold up unexpectedly well against the superiority of the Russian Federation. However, it is slowly getting closer to its military goals – despite the “massive problems it has”.

Military expert Masala: “Peace negotiations are conducted on the basis of realities”

It is important that support for Ukraine continues at all levels – political, economic, military. Masala thus also refers to efforts to find a political solution to the conflict. He emphasizes: “Peace negotiations are conducted on the basis of realities.”

Masala says the speed at which talks between the two sides seem to be making progress is surprising. “Of course, from Ukraine’s perspective, before Kyiv falls or there is a brutal battle for Kyiv, a solution is certainly preferable.”

According to Masala, this does not contradict the statements of the Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba, who had ruled out concessions that would affect the sovereignty or territorial integrity of his country. Masala: “The Ukrainian foreign minister is responsible for maintaining awareness abroad that Russia is the aggressor and that Ukraine must be helped.”

Masala thinks it’s possible that the President and Foreign Minister of Ukraine will act in public with different roles. Ultimately, however, Ukraine will have to give up certain positions.
