War in Ukraine: Peak meeting: US worried about China’s stance

Important representatives from the USA and China met in Rome. Both sides spoke about the war in Ukraine. China is considered Russia’s most important ally.

Against the background of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine, top representatives of the USA and China held “intensive” seven-hour consultations, according to US information. That’s what a senior US government official said in a phone briefing with journalists.

US President Joe Biden’s national security adviser, Jake Sullivan, expressed Washington’s “grave concern” about China’s rapprochement with Moscow at the meeting in Rome with Chinese foreign policy maker Yang Jiechi.

The US government representative did not want to comment on US media reports that Russia had asked China for military and economic aid. China had rejected corresponding reports on Monday. China is Russia’s most important ally, but is trying to maintain a more neutral stance in the conflict over Ukraine.

The US government official said planning for the meeting in Rome had already begun after Biden video chatted with Chinese President Xi Jinping in mid-November. “It was an intense seven-hour session that reflected the seriousness of the situation and our commitment to maintaining open lines of communication.” The talks in Rome were also about the escalation of tensions by North Korea.
