Trip to Kiev: heads of government from Poland, Czech Republic, Slovenia in Ukraine

Three European heads of government are on their way to Kyiv. A train brings Mateusz Morawiecki from Poland, Petr Fiala from the Czech Republic and Janez Jansa from Slovenia to the Ukrainian capital.

The heads of government of Poland, the Czech Republic and Slovenia want to travel to Kyiv today for a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

A train carrying Poland’s Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, his deputy Jaroslaw Kaczynski, Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala and his Slovenian counterpart Janez Jansa have already crossed the Polish-Ukrainian border and are on their way to Kyiv, said Polish government spokesman Piotr Müller in Warsaw. In addition to a meeting with Zelenskyy, talks with the Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Schmyhal are also planned there.

Meeting planned in secrecy

The decision for such a visit was made at the summit of EU heads of state and government in Versailles, France, on Friday. The visit had been prepared by the government in Warsaw for many days in the strictest secrecy.

He was closely coordinated with EU Council President Charles Michel and EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. “The delegation represents de facto the European Union, the European Council,” Müller continued. NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg and the US government have also been informed of the action.

Wide package of support for Ukraine

The Ukrainian capital has been shelled since the Russian war of aggression began on February 24. In Kyiv, the delegation will not only send a very clear and strong signal of support for the freedom struggle of Ukraine throughout the EU, but also present a package of concrete support for Ukraine, the government spokesman said.

When asked why the EU leaders did not go to Kyiv themselves, Müller replied: “This is a difficult question, but it is a question of the individual decisions of every European leader.”

According to Ukrainian sources, Russian shelling has repeatedly destroyed civilian targets in Kyiv. Only in the morning, a total of four residential buildings were attacked in several districts, the civil defense announced. At least two people were killed. Moscow insists on only targeting military targets.

Poland’s government spokesman said experts had thoroughly analyzed the security situation and concluded that “this visit simply has to take place”. It is also intended to be a powerful symbol of support.
