According to military expert Carlo Masala, Russian President Vladimir Putin will not stop the Ukraine war until his tanks are in Kyiv’s central square. Masala said Tuesday im star-Podcast “Ukraine – the situation”, the capital now has a symbolic value. “If – I’ll say it metaphorically – Russian tanks aren’t parked on the Maidan at some point, then Putin will have lost this war at home, too.”
The primary target of the Russian armed forces is still the east of the country, where they are primarily trying to capture the parts of Luhansk and Donetsk that are not yet held by Russian separatists. This is understandable, since these areas are the subject of negotiations. But Kyiv will also continue to be attacked. “The Russians are concerned with bringing about at least a de facto capitulation situation,” said the professor at the Bundeswehr University in Munich. In the next week or two it will become clear “whether the Russian armed forces are able to reposition their campaign”. Masala pointed out that the attackers were currently mainly bombing their targets without penetrating further. “That can’t be a strategy.”

Masala expressed reservations about the security guarantees demanded by Ukraine to protect the country from future threats. Protection by NATO or the USA is hardly acceptable for Russia; the European Union lacked the means to enforce guarantees, and multilateral agreements had already proved unreliable in the past. “I have no idea what these security guarantees could look like,” he said.
