Gerhard Schröder: Former Chancellor renounces honorary citizenship of Hanover

Not only the federal government is waiting for statements from former chancellor Gerhard Schröder about his trip to Moscow. Now he speaks up – albeit for honorary citizenship of the city of Hanover.

Former Chancellor Gerhard Schröder recently caused a stir with his trip to Moscow. What exactly he discussed there with Russian President Vladimir Putin and who else he met is still not known.

The SPD federal chairman Lars Klingbeil says he has not received any information about the conversation, but assumes that Schröder will comment on it soon. “Personally, and as far as I can see, the Federal Chancellery too, we have no information about what came out of this visit,” said Klingbeil on Tuesday on RTL/ntv’s “Frühstart” program. He went on to say: “He will certainly explain himself, because of course the German public is also interested in what the former chancellor is doing there.”

Now, however, Schröder explains himself on another topic: the planned revoking of his honorary citizenship in the Lower Saxony state capital of Hanover. Schröder posted a photo of a letter to Lord Mayor Belit Onay (Greens) on “LinkedIn”: “Dear Lord Mayor, I received your letter of March 11, 2022. After that, the City Council of Hanover is to revoke my honorary citizenship I will not comment on the content communicated to me. I irrevocably renounce the honorary citizenship of the city of Hanover.” Below is a signature.

Hanover wanted to abolish honorary citizenship

At the beginning of March, the administrative committee of the Lower Saxony state capital initiated proceedings to revoke Schröder’s honorary citizenship. The former chancellor was then given the opportunity to comment.

A city spokesman was initially unable to confirm receipt of the letter on Tuesday. A legal check is being carried out to determine whether the declaration of waiver is sufficient or whether a formal administrative act is required to revoke the honorary citizenship. A decision on the withdrawal of honorary citizenship should be made on March 31.

Gerhard Schröder and his trip to Moscow

The federal government, SPD and the German public will have to wait for details on Schröder’s trip to Moscow.

Schröder traveled to Moscow on Wednesday to hold talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin about the Ukraine war. According to information from the DPA news agency and other media, Schröder flew to Moscow via Istanbul. A conversation between Schröder and Putin took place on Thursday.
