The Union criticizes the federal government that it does not support the refugees from Ukraine enough. The CDU and CSU had had time to create structures for admission for years.
The Union has called on the federal government to do even more for war refugees from Ukraine and also to ensure that they are distributed across Europe. Deputy CDU chairwoman Silvia Breher told the German Press Agency, Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) “must finally take care of the coordination of the reception and help for women and children between the federal, state and local authorities”. “I only see laissez-faire instead of leadership. The women and children who have fled Ukraine suffer from this,” said Breher. “It must be ensured that the arrival and reception of refugees are finally better coordinated – by the state. The traffic light leaves too much to chance.”
This is – to put it mildly – an astonishing demand from a party that only six months ago had the chancellor and has had five years since 2016 to create structures at federal level for the reception of refugees. Instead, they preferred to rely on volunteers and leave the “problem” to the cities and municipalities.
Union wants to redistribute refugees quickly
The chairman of the conference of interior ministers, Bavarian Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann (CSU), makes it clear what the Union should really be about. He described the quick help for the refugees as “a joint national and European effort”. The CSU politician emphasized in the editorial network Germany that the federal government had promised a fair distribution among the federal states and relief for the hotspot regions. But an orderly and fair distribution between the EU members is just as important. “Here, too, I see the federal government as having a duty,” said Herrmann.
So: just get on with the refugees! Nor is it a glorifying sheet for a party that has “Christian” in its name. So far, Germany has registered around 175,000 people from Ukraine. So far, 1.9 million refugees from the embattled country have arrived in Poland. For Germany, which is about six times as high as Poland, the comparison of the Ukrainians admitted is embarrassing. However, for many refugees, Poland is merely a transit country. Who in the end builds a new life where will only be known in years to come.
Oppositon must criticize – but like this?
Yes, without the voluntary commitment of thousands, the arrival of those fleeing Ukraine would be even more chaotic than it already is. And, of course, the core task of an opposition party is to criticize the federal government. But the fact that the Union is now blaming a government that was elected just six months ago for its own years of neglect is one thing above all: mendacious.
