Russian invasion: attack on theaters in Mariupol with hundreds of civilians

Russian troops are said to have attacked a theater used as a safe haven in Mariupol. It is unclear how many victims there are. Moscow denies the attack – and blames the Azov regiment.

Kyiv and Moscow blame each other for an alleged attack on hundreds of civilians at a theater in the Ukrainian port city of Mariupol.

Russian soldiers did not carry out any airstrikes against ground targets in Mariupol on Wednesday, the Russian Defense Ministry said, according to the Interfax agency. “According to available reliable data,” the Ukrainian nationalist Azov regiment attacked the previously mined theater building, it said.

Earlier, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba blamed Russia for the attack. “Another appalling war crime in Mariupol,” he tweeted. “Fierce Russian attack on Drama Theater where hundreds of innocent civilians are hiding.”

The building was completely destroyed. The information provided by both sides could not initially be checked independently. Information on the victims was also initially not available.

Swimming pool is also said to have been bombed

In addition to the theater, according to Ukrainian sources, another place where civilians were was said to have been bombed. A swimming pool was hit, in which women with children and pregnant women sought protection, reported the Unian agency, citing the head of the military administration of the Donetsk region, Pavlo Kyrylenko. People were buried, said Kyrylenko accordingly. The Ukrainian side also blamed Russian soldiers for this attack.

Mariupol has been surrounded by Russian troops for weeks and is being shelled from several sides. Hundreds of thousands of people are said to be trapped in the city on the Azov Sea in catastrophic conditions.
