War in Ukraine: Selenskyj appeals to Scholz and demands leadership

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj spoke in the Bundestag via video link. In his speech he formulated clear demands on Germany.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy spoke before the British Parliament last week and before the US Senate and Congress on Wednesday. Now he is being switched to the German Bundestag via video call. The federal cabinet is assembled. The Ukrainian Ambassador to Germany, Andrij Melnyk, and the former Federal President Christian Wulff took their places in the audience.

The transmission was delayed by a few minutes because, according to Katrin Göring-Eckardt, an attack took place near Zelenskyj’s headquarters. As in London and Washington DC, there is clapping as the President’s face appears on the screen. “The Ukrainians are more united than before,” explained the Vice President of the Bundestag in her speech. “Germany stands by your side.”

“Russia is bombing our cities and destroying everything in Ukraine. Houses, hospitals, schools, churches, everything. With rockets, with air bombs, with artillery. In three weeks, thousands of Ukrainians died. The occupiers have already killed 108 children,” reports Zelenskyj in his speech. “Everything is a target for them,” emphasizes the president when he talks about the Russian troops. Both civilian and military targets would be attacked. In Mariupol the people were surrounded.

“The sanctions were not sufficient to stop the war.” The President once again urgently questions why Nord Stream 2 was not cut earlier, why Ukraine is not allowed to join NATO. “We have seen that it is about the economy.” There is a wall in Europe again. He complains that he had asked for help for a long time in vain. “And even now you are still hesitant about Ukraine’s accession to the European Union.” That too is a “stone for the new wall”.

“Why is a land from which we are separated by the ocean nearer?” Selenskyj appeals to the MPs’ conscience. But he also thanks the German people, the conscientious journalists, the companies that cut Russian connections. “I’m grateful to those who can see over walls. It’s about people. It’s difficult to defend Ukraine without your help.” He calls on Chancellor Scholz to give Germany the leadership it deserves. “Stop this war!”

His impressive speech received a standing ovation from parliamentarians.
