Will there be a nuclear escalation in the Ukraine war? The military expert Carlo Masala says: “Should Putin’s military back increasingly be against the wall, then it cannot be ruled out that he will resort to other means,” as he says in the star-Podcast “Ukraine – the situation” explained.
According to military expert Carlo Masala, if Russian troops fail militarily in the coming weeks, President Vladimir Putin could also demonstrate his resolve with the help of a tactical nuclear weapon. Masala says im starPodcast “Ukraine – the situation”: “If Putin’s military back is increasingly against the wall, it cannot be ruled out that he will resort to other means.” This scenario is still far away, he emphasizes. But if the Ukrainians manage to regain territory and gain the upper hand, the situation could change.
Masala: Signals from the Russian leadership are contradictory
“Then we may also be talking about a so-called demonstration strike, that is, the use of a tactical nuclear weapon – not as a battlefield weapon, but at high altitude – experts say: over the Baltic Sea or over the Black Sea – in order to ultimately deter Western societies from continue to support Ukraine.”
Masala says the signals from the Russian leadership are contradictory, though it’s not clear if this is intentional or an indication of internal fissures. While Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov expressed confidence in the conclusion of an agreement with Ukraine, Putin delivered a speech that could hardly be surpassed in terms of sharpness. One has the impression “that he wants to continue to push through his military and political goals with all his might.” Putin urgently needs a result that can be sold as a domestic success. “It doesn’t matter whether that’s really true or not, it’s about propaganda,” says the politics professor from the Bundeswehr University in Munich.

“This week and next week will be very pivotal for military developments,” says Masala. “There are certainly serious voices that have been trusting the Ukrainian side to win for the past few days.” The decisive factor will be whether the Russian troops succeed in regrouping. Masala expects the military conflict to be concentrated in the capital. “We’re all waiting to see what happens in Kyiv.” The position of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is also discussed there: “If Zelensky is a president who is sitting on a pile of rubble and ash, from Putin’s point of view that is a maximum humiliation of this man.”
