In the Bundestag debate about compulsory vaccination, Karl Lauterbach sharply criticized opponents. The whole country will again be “held hostage” by the unvaccinated next fall unless everyone is given mandatory protection.
In the debate about the general obligation to vaccinate, Federal Minister of Health Karl Lauterbach in the Bundestag emphatically campaigned for support for the introduction of an obligation to vaccinate – and he did not skimp on clear words. “Where are we now?” asked Lauterbach. “We have to prepare for the fall,” otherwise the health system could be overwhelmed again. “And then what about the children? The shops?”
Lauterbach sees compulsory vaccination as a unique opportunity: “We can end the pandemic for Germany for the first time with compulsory vaccination”. And: “We’ll be in the same position in the fall as we are now if we don’t seize this unique opportunity together.”

Lauterbach emphasized that the existing vaccines were working to prevent serious illness and death and warned: “The probability that we will not have any difficulties fighting the corona pandemic in the fall is almost zero percent.”
Then the question of overloading the health system would arise again and restrictions would have to be discussed, Lauterbach made it clear, before criticizing opponents of vaccination: “The whole country will be held hostage by these people. We can no longer afford that.” That is against any scientific evidence. “The unvaccinated are currently responsible for the fact that we are not making any progress.”
If it is possible to get a vaccination rate well over 90 percent among the over-60s and one so high in the rest of the population that waves can no longer spread properly, then one does not have to go back to the previous endless loops, said Lauterbach. He did not speak as a minister in the debate, but went to the lectern from among the members of the SPD.
Four more requests
Federal Economics Minister Robert Habeck from the Greens also spoke out in favor of introducing compulsory vaccinations from the age of 18: “Let’s get this pandemic over with, let’s get rid of the virus and then return to freedom,” he said. The problem: Only 236 MPs support the motion. That’s far from the majority.
The FDP MP Andrew Ullmann campaigned for his proposal to introduce compulsory advice for everyone over 18 – with the possibility of later creating a vaccination requirement from the age of 50. His group trusts people to make the right decision – with good and professional education.
With the pension law planned by the Union, a graduated procedure according to occupational and age groups is to be introduced. The obligation to vaccinate would therefore have to be activated by a separate decision of the Bundestag. In addition, the CDU/CSU considers a vaccination register to be necessary.
AfD is against compulsory vaccination
There is currently no majority for a general obligation to vaccinate from the age of 18, said Union parliamentary group Vice Sepp Müller. “At this point, compulsory vaccination is dead.”
The FDP deputy Manuel Höferlin opposed any compulsory vaccination and thus supported the advance of the FDP party vice president Wolfgang Kubicki. Vaccination protects against serious illnesses or death. However, this does not result in an obligation. He pointed out that Austria had now suspended the vaccination requirement introduced there.
AfD parliamentary group leader Alice Weidel also opposed any vaccination requirement. The protection hoped for from the vaccination is in question, and there are also many vaccinated and boosted people in the intensive care units. “The arguments for compulsory vaccination were weak from the start and collapsed like a house of cards.” In its own application, the AfD opposes the obligation to vaccinate.
