The number of refugees from Ukraine arriving in Germany continues to increase. This could provide positive impetus for Germany, says Franziska Giffey.
According to the Federal Ministry of the Interior, 187,428 people from Ukraine have entered Germany and been registered since the beginning of the Russian attack. Most refugees are women and children.
According to Berlin’s Governing Mayor Franziska Giffey, there are also many professionally qualified people among the refugees. The constantly growing number of arriving Ukrainian war refugees could therefore bring positive impulses for Germany. She was in favor of “that we see this development, which we are now seeing, not only as a burden, but as an opportunity,” said the SPD politician after a federal-state switch in Berlin. “Because there is a major obstacle to growth in Germany, and that is the lack of skilled workers.”
One hears from the Ukrainian community in Berlin that many who arrive here do not first ask the question: Where can I apply for benefits, said Giffey. “Rather, the first thing they asked was: Where can I work? “We have to take advantage of this opportunity,” says Giffey.
Distribution of war refugees “major task”
Giffey pointed to the need for a coordinated nationwide distribution of incoming Ukrainian war refugees. What is in store for Germany can already be seen in Berlin, said the SPD politician. Around 10,000 refugees arrive in the capital every day, and the Senate has to accommodate around 1,500 of them every day in the accommodation activated by the state.
“We have the great task of coordinating the distribution of refugees to the other federal states from Berlin,” says Giffey. “We need the support of the federal government. This support has been promised to us.” She is “very happy” that 80 Bundeswehr soldiers will help with the registration at the planned new large arrival center Ukraine in Berlin-Tegel.
Wüst promises solidarity with Ukraine
North Rhine-Westphalia’s Prime Minister Hendrik Wüst (CDU) said the solidarity of the federal states and help for the refugees was important to Ukraine. Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine is causing suffering to millions of people, said the chairman of the ministerial conference. The moving video appearance of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyj in the Bundestag on Thursday deserves an appropriate response, said Wüst.
The countries agree that the sanctions decided against Russia must be implemented consistently and that circumvention must be tackled harshly. The second answer is solidarity: “We oppose the brutality of this war of aggression with solidarity and charity,” emphasized Wüst.
The MPK chairman emphasized that refugee aid is a national task and can only be tackled jointly by the federal and state governments. The federal states and municipalities are doing everything they can to create additional reception capacities. “Taking in the refugees will be a tour de force for them, including financially,” said Wüst. “Our municipalities will not be able to do this alone”.
Federal police controls increased
At the moment, only refugees who are identified by the federal police, for example at the Austrian-Bavarian border, at train stations or on trains, are recorded.
The federal police are intensifying controls, for example in the border area with Poland. As a rule, however, there are no fixed border controls at the EU’s internal borders, and Ukrainians are allowed to enter the country without a visa – the number of people who have arrived is therefore probably significantly higher. It is also not recorded how many may travel on from Germany to friends or relatives in other countries.
According to the UN, more than three million people from Ukraine have already sought refuge abroad. Most initially stayed in neighboring countries.
