An organization of relatives of those who have disappeared in Mexico has published a startling number: more than 52,000 dead lie in the country’s mass graves. More than 99,000 people are listed as missing.
There are now more than 52,000 unidentified dead in morgues and mass graves in Mexico.
The number was determined by the Movement for Our Disappeared in Mexico, an organization of relatives of the disappeared, through field research and inquiries with authorities, and was confirmed by the government. Mexico’s Deputy Minister for Human Rights, Alejandro Encinas, announced it at a daily press conference held by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador on Thursday.
More than 99,000 people are believed to have disappeared
In the North American country, which has had very high murder rates since the start of the so-called drug war in 2006, more than 99,000 people are now believed to have disappeared. Groups of relatives search for buried remains on their own. When found, however, they often remain in morgues for long periods of time without being identified. There is no national DNA database that would allow samples from corpses to be matched with genetic material from missing persons.
There is also a lack of uniform statistics on unidentified and identified but not collected bodies, said Encinas. “This is a very serious legal omission.” The high number of unidentified dead reflects a crisis in Mexico that is not only related to a lack of resources, but also to a lack of will on the part of the local authorities to change the situation.
