Corona pandemic: USA: Moderna applies for emergency approval for second booster

While the vaccination rate in the USA is stagnating, the US pharmaceutical manufacturer Moderna is trying to launch its second corona booster vaccination for everyone aged 18 and over.

The US pharmaceutical manufacturer Moderna has applied to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for emergency approval for a second corona booster vaccination for adults.

“This application is based in part on recently released data collected in the United States and Israel following the emergence of Omicron,” the company said. At the beginning of the week, the manufacturers Biontech and Pfizer also applied for emergency approval for an additional booster, i.e. the fourth dose in total – but only for people over 65 years of age.

According to Moderna, the application applies to all people over the age of 18 so that health authorities can determine the appropriate use of a second booster vaccination – for example for those who are at higher risk of Covid-19 due to their age or a previous illness. Moderna also stated that research data had confirmed the effectiveness of the corona vaccine. Clinical studies continued for a booster specially tailored to the Omikron variant.

The vaccination rate in the USA is stagnating. A good 65 percent of the 330 million inhabitants have been vaccinated twice. A good 44 percent of this subgroup – in total not even every third resident of the country – have received a booster vaccination. For comparison: In Germany, around 58 percent of people are now boosted.

The USA was hit hard by the omicron wave around the turn of the year, but the number of corona infections has been falling significantly since mid-January. In many places, the mask requirement has now fallen.
