Pandemic: Union describes Corona law as “bad”

The slimmed-down Infection Protection Act is coming. The Union does not want to accept that. Bayern does not want to make use of the rules. In a neighboring country there is even a tightening again.

The Union continues to fight against the changed infection law with only a few corona protection rules. The German Association of Cities assumes that the law will soon be corrected.

The Bundestag had passed the new regulation, the Bundesrat let it pass, but with widespread protest. The Chamber of States refrained from calling the Mediation Committee because otherwise there would have been no legal basis from Sunday for the time being. The amended law was published in the Federal Law Gazette on Friday.

The new legal basis should apply from tomorrow, as the current one expires this Saturday. In order to control the pandemic, the federal states are still able to set a few general requirements for masks and tests in facilities for vulnerable groups such as clinics and nursing homes. Masks should continue to be compulsory on buses and trains. However, further restrictions are possible for regional “hotspots” if the state parliament determines a particularly critical corona situation for them. All countries want to use a transitional period and maintain the applicable protection rules until April 2nd at the latest.

criticism of the law

The parliamentary director of the Union faction, Thorsten Frei, described the law as “awful”. This means that proper basic protection is no longer possible. The “hotspot” rule puts the countries in a very uncertain legal situation, the CDU politician criticized in the “Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung” (Saturday). “I’ll say it very clearly: We don’t want anything to do with this law. We consider what the traffic light is presenting to be completely irresponsible, »said Frei.

Bavaria’s Health Minister Klaus Holetschek complained that the law was not practicable. It is not clear how it can be applied and what standards and parameters apply to “hotspots”, said the CSU politician of the “Augsburger Allgemeine” (Saturday). Bavaria is therefore not planning to make use of it for the time being. No precautions would be taken after April 2nd, Holetschek said.

NRW Prime Minister Hendrik Wüst (CDU) criticized the federal government forgoing the law on the expertise of the states. All countries agree across party lines that this approach is unacceptable, the chairman of the Prime Ministers’ Conference told the editorial network Germany (RND/Saturday). Wüst added: “I hope that the federal government will soon return to commonality in pandemic policy.”

FDP defends law

Federal Finance Minister Christian Lindner defended the law. It is “responsible” and finds the right balance between individual and state health protection. The federal states remained able to act with the “hotspot” regulation, said the FDP boss of the “Augsburger Allgemeine”. “We are now taking a step towards normality with Corona,” said Lindner. “In this phase of the pandemic, we are strengthening people’s personal responsibility again,” he emphasized.

The German Association of Cities expects the new rules to be corrected quickly. “It is now to be feared a patchwork quilt,” said
City Day President Markus Lewe the newspapers of the Funke media group (Saturday). “And it’s quite likely that the law will have to be corrected again soon,” he added.

Many countries in Europe have already largely abolished corona rules. Austria is now tightening the reins again in view of the sharp increase in the number of infections. From the middle of next week, FFP2 masks will have to be worn in public interiors again, as Health Minister Johannes Rauch announced on Friday evening. In the neighboring country, the seven-day incidence is about twice as high as in Germany.
