Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier began his second term in office on Saturday in conversation with citizens of the Thuringian city of Altenburg.
Democracy is endangered when hatred and violence spread so that people avoid local politics, said Steinmeier at a breakfast with citizens who volunteer. With his stay in Altenburg, he wants to find out where Germany stands after two years of the pandemic and after the start of the war in Ukraine. “It’s not supposed to be a flying visit, we want to feel a bit what life is like in Altenburg.”
Steinmeier had moved his official seat to Altenburg from Friday to Sunday. It is the prelude to a series of trips entitled “Local time in Germany” that will shape his second term in office. The declared goal is to get to know everyday life and hardships in the regions and to reduce mistrust of state authorities.
Steinmeier had specifically chosen East Germany and Altenburg for the first “local time” trip. In the district town with around 32,000 inhabitants, there have been repeated demonstrations by critics of the corona measures in recent months. Steinmeier was re-elected on February 13. March 19 is the first day of his second term.
