More than 200,000 people displaced from Ukraine are already registered in Germany – the German Association of Cities is now calling for an effective distribution of the refugees.

Cities that had recently taken in a large number of refugees from Ukraine after the Russian attack urgently needed relief, said General Manager Helmut Dedy of the German Press Agency. This can only be achieved “through effective control, which the federal and state governments have still not succeeded in”.

In addition, when distributing the refugees according to the Königstein key, people who do not come with registered bus and train journeys must also be taken into account. Those who have arrived individually in the cities must also be counted in the distribution. In order to prevent individual states from being overloaded, the federal government is coordinating the trains and buses that can be called up via the Federal Office for Goods Transport, said a spokeswoman for the Federal Ministry of the Interior. A distribution “only takes place with people who have not already found accommodation elsewhere”.
