War in Ukraine: Deputy Prime Minister: Russia is committing genocide

That is “not a question, but simply the reality we are confronted with”: Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Olga Stefanishina speaks of war crimes against her people.

The Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Olga Stefanishina sees the actions of the Russian troops in the invasion of her country as genocide.

That is “not a question, but simply the reality we are confronted with,” Stefanischina told the British news channel Sky News. Russian President Vladimir Putin and those responsible in the Kremlin are war criminals, said Stefanishina.

According to the politician, the Ukrainian authorities have launched 2,000 investigations against Russian soldiers for alleged crimes. Among other things, there were reports of rapes and murders. Every individual who committed a crime must be held accountable, she said.

Definition of Genocide

According to the relevant UN Convention of 1948, genocide is defined as crimes committed or ordered with the intention “to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnic, racial or religious group”. Kyiv has already accused Russia before the International Court of Justice in The Hague of plotting genocide against Ukrainians and of violating the Convention with the unsubstantiated allegation of genocide against Russians in eastern Ukraine. The highest UN court initially ordered Russia to end military violence. The International Criminal Court in The Hague is also investigating possible Russian war crimes in Ukraine.
