2700 Strela anti-aircraft missiles from former NVA stocks have been promised, 500 of which have now been delivered. The handover is said to have taken place in Poland.
Ukraine has received 500 Strela anti-aircraft missiles from Germany. The weapons were already handed over on Thursday, according to Ukrainian government circles. The “Welt am Sonntag” reported on this first. According to the newspaper, the handover took place in Poland.
A spokeswoman for the Federal Ministry of Defense said that due to “operational and security aspects” no information on specific weapon systems could be given. Deliveries of various military equipment to support the Ukrainian armed forces have been promised and have already arrived, and more will be added if possible.
More rockets are to follow
Originally there was talk of up to 2,700 Strela anti-aircraft missiles, but the Federal Security Council still had to deal with the delivery. The rockets are Soviet-made weapons from former stocks of the National People’s Army (NVA) of the GDR.
After the Russian attack on Ukraine, Germany had changed course and, in addition to various items of equipment, had already handed over rocket-propelled grenades and the “Stinger” anti-aircraft system to Ukraine. Until then, the federal government rejected all exports of lethal weapons to the country on principle because it is a crisis area.
