In view of the Russian invasion, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has called on Israel to take a clear stance against Moscow. In a speech by video link to the Israeli Parliament, in which he repeatedly compared Russia’s invasion to the Holocaust, Zelenskyy said that “Ukraine made the decision to save Jews 80 years ago”. Now is the time “that Israel makes its choice”.
“Indifference Kills”, said the Ukrainian president, who is Jewish himself. Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett is trying to mediate between Russia and Ukraine. He spoke to both Russian leaders Vladimir Putin and Zelenskyy on the phone last week and flew to Moscow to meet with Putin earlier this month.
“It is possible to mediate between countries, but not between good and evil”, Zelenskyj said in his speech and lamented the lack of support from his country. “We wonder why the State of Israel doesn’t give us weapons and why it doesn’t impose sanctions on Russia.” Zelenskyy’s speech was also broadcast on a big screen in a Tel Aviv square.
