A 43-year-old was shot on Saturday evening on the Greek-Turkish border river Evros, according to matching media reports. The fire is said to have been opened by people in civilian clothes from the Greek shore.
The state news agency Anadolu reported on Sunday that the Greek side had been asked to investigate the incident, punish the “murderers” and take precautions to prevent this from happening again. The right to compensation is reserved for the victims of the incident and their families.
Greece denied allegations. Turkey should “better guard its borders and stop the activities of human traffickers,” said a statement by the Greek Foreign Ministry on Sunday. This is what the envoy from the Greek embassy in Ankara said to the Turkish foreign ministry.
Course of the incident unclear
There are various details about the course of the incident near the village of Adasarhanli. Anadolu, citing the mayor, reported that the 43-year-old was sitting with a friend on the bank of the river when gunfire rang out. The man was hit in the cheek and died on the spot. The Turkish news agency DHA, however, wrote that the victim and a friend wanted to fetch a boat from the river that they had used to smuggle migrants. There was then a dispute with people in civilian clothes on the Greek side and shots were fired.
At the border river Evros, migrants from Turkey repeatedly try to get to Greece. Since Friday, the European border protection agency Frontex has also been using an airship to monitor the region.
