Iran has denied being involved in an attack on a tanker in the Persian Gulf.
Two crew members were killed in the attack on the ship of the British Zodiac Maritime group on Thursday. The Zodiac Group is chaired by the Israeli businessman Eyal Ofer. Not least because of this, Israel had blamed Iran for the attack.
“We condemn these baseless allegations on the part of the Zionists (Israel, note),” said Iran’s Foreign Office spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh yesterday in Tehran. Israel is an illegitimate and violent regime and absurd blame would neither change this fact nor benefit the regime, said Khatibzadeh.
Israel’s Foreign Minister Yair Lapid previously described Iran on Twitter as an “exporter of terror, destruction and instability that harm us all”.
Israel’s Prime Minister Naftali Bennett had also previously attacked the arch enemy Iran and made it responsible: the international community is expected to “make it clear to the Iranian regime that it has made a serious mistake”. The Iranians attacked the ship with unmanned drones “because they wanted to attack an Israeli target,” said Bennett.
Zodiac Maritime reported the incident on Friday.
