In view of the mass exodus from the war in Ukraine, Bavaria’s Prime Minister Markus Söder is calling for a central coordination office in the Chancellery.
“We need coordination that takes place in the Federal Chancellery,” said the CSU chairman on Monday evening on the “RTL Direkt” program. “Working groups are to be set up again by the beginning of April. It really has to happen much faster.” The states and municipalities are already at the limit when it comes to accommodating those who arrive.
“We have now advanced a billion for the municipalities in Bavaria alone,” said Söder. “That won’t be enough in the long run. The federal government must fulfill its obligation.” So far, more than 225,000 refugees have been registered in Germany. The actual number is likely to be significantly higher because Ukrainians are allowed to enter the country without a visa and there are usually no fixed controls at the internal EU borders. Above all, the conurbations and first and foremost Berlin are very heavily burdened.

Green Party leader Omid Nouripour and Green Bundestag Vice President Katrin Göring-Eckardt also spoke out in favor of a cross-ministerial crisis team in the Chancellery. According to the UN, more than three million people have fled Ukraine, which once had a total population of more than 44 million, since the Russian attack. Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said on Monday in Brussels: “We have to assume that there will be eight to ten million refugees in the next few weeks.”
The police union GdP recommended the establishment of protection zones in train stations for war refugees. In train stations, criminals approached young women and children before the police even came into contact with them, said the GdP chairman for the interests of the federal police, Andreas Roßkopf, the “Rheinische Post” (Tuesday).
