War in Ukraine: Kyiv: Aid convoy arrested near Mariupol

Pro-Russian separatists arrest an aid convoy near Mariupol. Several people were taken hostage. They drove buses in which civilians should have been evacuated.

According to information from Kyiv, pro-Russian separatists have arrested an aid convoy not far from the besieged Ukrainian port of Mariupol.

Fighters from the self-proclaimed Donetsk People’s Republic have taken several employees of the Ukrainian civil defense as “hostages” in Manhush, ten kilometers west of Mariupol, Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Wereshchuk said on Ukrainian television on Tuesday. The information could not initially be independently verified.

100,000 people are waiting to be evacuated

The arrested people drove buses in which civilians were to be evacuated from Mariupol, Vereshchuk said. The escape route had been agreed with the International Red Cross. More than 100,000 people are waiting for an evacuation, but are stuck in the city on the Azov Sea, where observers say the situation is becoming increasingly dramatic.

According to Ukrainian information, almost 6,000 people were able to leave Mariupol in private cars on Tuesday. Meanwhile, the Russian Defense Ministry said more than 68,000 other civilians had been evacuated from the city without Kiev’s help. These people are now “in complete safety under the protection of the Russian Federation”. Kyiv, on the other hand, accuses Moscow of bringing women and children in particular to Russia against their will.
