After the Klitschko brothers had already invited the spiritual leaders of the world to Kyiv to send a signal for peace, President Zelenskyj now also advocates a visit by the Pope.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has invited Pope Francis to visit Ukraine. Selenskyj reported that in his video address during the night via a telephone call with the pontiff.
“I spoke to the Pope about the search for peace in Ukraine, about the atrocities of the occupiers and about humanitarian corridors for besieged cities,” said Zelenskyy.
On this occasion he invited the Pope to visit Ukraine. “I believe that we can organize this important visit that would support each of us equally.”
Kiev’s Mayor Vitali Klitschko had previously invited the head of the Catholic Church to the embattled capital of Ukraine. In the letter, dated March 8, Klitschko expresses hope that a visit by global religious leaders to Kyiv “is the key to saving lives and paving the way for peace in our city, the country and beyond.”
So far there has been no information about a possible response from the Vatican to the invitations.
As early as March 5, the brothers Vitali and Wladimir Klitschko invited the spiritual leaders of the world – including the Pope, the Dalai Lama, Israel’s Chief Rabbi David Baruch Lau and the Orthodox Patriarch of Moscow, Cyril – to Kyiv in a video message to make a peace sign.
