Former US President Barack Obama is apparently planning a big celebration on the occasion of his 60th birthday. Hundreds of guests should come. The US health authority was recently forced to adjust its guidelines because of major events.
Former US President Barack Obama is planning a big celebration with hundreds of guests on the occasion of his 60th birthday this Wednesday. This is reported by the US portal. Accordingly, the event should take place next weekend on Martha’s Vineyard, an island off the south coast of Massachusetts. The US state recently made headlines because of the strong spread of the Delta virus variant.
The US health authority CDC adapted its guidelines and recommended that people who have been vaccinated again wear a mask in many closed rooms. This was based on the results of a study on a corona outbreak in the state of Massachusetts, said CDC boss Rochelle Walensky. According to the study, 469 infections were identified in the outbreak around several major events, almost 75 percent of them in people with full vaccination protection and the majority with the Delta variant.
Ex-President Obama is expecting hundreds of guests
As “Axios” reported, 475 guests were invited to Obama’s birthday party – including friends, family and former employees – and more than 200 employees were planned. Accordingly, there should be a “Covid coordinator” on site who is responsible for compliance with the corona rules – although these have so far remained vague, as the portal reported.
Obama’s guests will therefore be tested for the corona virus, but it is unclear whether it is mandatory to wear mouth and nose protection. The vaccination against the coronavirus is apparently not necessary to participate in the celebration, but this would be recommended to the guests.
In addition, the festival should take place in the open air. According to an “Axios” reporter on the island, the celebrations could take place on the Obamas’ twelve million dollar estate, which is located directly on the sea. According to “Axios”, the island of Martha’s Vineyard is not considered an area with a “significantly high” risk of infection by the standards of the US health authority.
Little is known about the invited guests, but there are initial indications. It is speculated whether Pearl Jam will appear at the celebration – a member of the rock band was spotted at a hairdresser on the island, according to “Axios”. The successful director and producer Steven Spielberg (“Indiana Jones”, “Jurassic Parc”) is also expected.
Joe Biden, the incumbent US president and Obama’s vice-president at the time, will not be there, as a White House spokesman told Axios. “Although President Biden cannot be there this weekend, he is looking forward to meeting former President Obama and welcoming him to the over-60s club,” the spokesman was quoted as saying. The White House did not respond to the question of whether it had concerns about the crowd.
Vaccination demand in the USA is rising again in the middle of a new wave of infections
In view of the rapidly increasing number of new corona infections in the USA recently had significantly more people vaccinated again. The vaccination campaign had stalled since June, with only around half a million injections being administered each day. However, the trend has now reversed in the face of the new corona wave, which is attributed to the particularly contagious delta variant. 816,000 vaccinations were given on Sunday (local time), including 517,000 primary vaccinations, a senior White House official wrote on Twitter. The latest data showed a “steady increase,” said Cyrus Shahpar.
The number of new infections registered per day on a weekly average, which temporarily fell to 11,000 in June, is now back to 72,000. The number of new infections is increasing nationwide, but states with lower vaccination rates are particularly affected, including Louisiana and Florida.
In the United States, almost 50 percent of the population of around 330 million people have so far been fully vaccinated, and around 58 percent have received at least the first injection. US President Joe Biden had set the target in the spring that by the national holiday on July 4th, 70 percent of adults should have received at least the first vaccination. The target was missed despite ample supplies and vaccination incentives, it was only 67 percent.
