War in Ukraine: US government accuses Russian troops of war crimes

Attacks on Homes, Schools and Hospitals: In view of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the US government concludes that war crimes are being committed in the country.

The US government has officially accused Russian troops of war crimes in Ukraine for the first time.

“Today I can announce that, based on the information currently available, the US government has determined that members of the Russian armed forces in Ukraine have committed war crimes,” said US Secretary of State Antony Blinken. “Our assessment is based on a careful review of available information from public and intelligence sources.” Blinken is currently accompanying US President Joe Biden on his trip to Brussels and Poland to discuss Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine.

Numerous credible reports

Blinken’s statement said Russian President Vladimir Putin had “unleashed relentless violence that has caused death and destruction across Ukraine.” The US government has received numerous credible reports of targeted attacks on civilians and other atrocities. “Russian forces have destroyed homes, schools, hospitals, vital infrastructure, civilian vehicles, shopping malls and ambulances, killing or wounding thousands of innocent civilians.” Many of these targets were clearly used by civilians.

Blinken had already accused Russia of war crimes in Ukraine last Thursday, but described this as his personal opinion. Biden called Putin a “war criminal” on Wednesday. His spokeswoman Jen Psaki said afterwards that he spoke “from his heart”.

Russia expels US diplomats

Meanwhile, Russia has declared several US diplomats in Moscow undesirable. A representative of the US embassy in Moscow had been given a list of diplomats who had to leave the country in response to the expulsion of 12 Russian representatives to the United Nations in New York at the end of February. The Foreign Ministry in Moscow did not provide any information on the number of expelled diplomats. The US side was also informed that any hostile actions by the United States against Russia would receive an appropriate response, the ministry said.

According to the Russian UN representation, the United States had declared twelve diplomats in New York undesirable persons at the end of February. The United States would thereby “grossly violate their obligations in the host country agreement,” criticized Moscow.

In fact, at least some diplomats working at the United Nations in New York have special protections because the UN is an international organization to which all member countries must have access. The host country agreement between the United States and the United Nations states that “in the event of abuse of such residence privileges” US laws and regulations can be applied. The US Deputy Ambassador to the UN, Richard Mills, referred to this passage in February.
