“It’s not a fuss” – Annalena Baerbock argues with Friedrich Merz

Annalena Baerbock is committed to feminist foreign policy. There was criticism for this in the Bundestag, and the Foreign Minister responded with a committed speech.

In some respects, the Ukraine war has resulted in an unusual level of unity between the federal government and the opposition, but there were also quite a few arguments during the general debate in the Bundestag. Friedrich Merz, leader of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group and leader of the opposition, demanded that the special fund of 100 billion euros announced by Chancellor Olaf Scholz be used exclusively for the Bundeswehr and not for a “feminist foreign policy”.

Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock reacted to this with a committed speech: The Green Party politician explained how important she believes it is to have a foreign policy that focuses on women. Baerbock pointed out that rape is used as a weapon of war and recounted her meetings with women in Srbrenica who had to suffer such a fate. The deeds were not prosecuted by the International Court of Justice at the time. “That’s why security policy for the 21st century also includes a feminist perspective,” explained the Foreign Minister.

Annalena Baerbock: Women’s rights a yardstick for democracy

“It’s not nonsense, it’s up to date,” Baerbock exclaimed, alluding to a well-known statement by the former SPD Chancellor Gerhard Schröder, who in 1998 reorganized the Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth as the “Ministry for Family and fuss”. A feminist foreign policy does not mean rejecting investments in the Bundeswehr, but broadening the view of all victims of war.

An excerpt from her speech, which Baerbock posted on Instagram, was widely shared and commented on on social networks. “In authoritarian regimes, it’s the rights of women and marginalized groups that have to believe in it first. They show where the journey is going,” the 41-year-old continued. Women’s rights are “a yardstick for democracy worldwide and therefore also a yardstick for security”.

Ampel pursues feminist foreign policy

When Baerbock took office, he committed himself to a feminist foreign policy. The concept is also laid down in the traffic light coalition agreement. They want to “strengthen the rights, resources and representation of women and girls worldwide and promote social diversity,” it says.
