At their summit in Brussels, the EU heads of state and government confirmed Charles Michel in his office as Council President. The 46-year-old Belgian had been re-elected for a second term of two and a half years, the European Council announced on Thursday evening in Brussels. Michel will remain in office until the end of November 2024. His re-election was considered certain since there was no opposing candidate.
Michel has been President of the European Council since 2019. Since then, the former Belgian head of government has not only made friends. Insiders describe his relationship with EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen as tense. It not only refers to the “Sofagate” affair in Turkey, but also to very different characters.

On a joint trip with von der Leyen to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in April last year, Michel sat right next to Erdogan, while the German Commission President had to sit on a couch some distance away.
The main task of the permanent Council President is to chair the EU summits, where the 27 heads of state and government meet. The post was created 15 years ago with the Lisbon Treaty to give the EU more visibility. Michel’s leadership style has been criticized by some in Brussels as cumbersome and lengthy. Smaller EU countries, on the other hand, praised the fact that they would have a more detailed say under the Belgian.
