Gerhard Schröder: Ukraine war “consequence of political failure”

Former Chancellor and confidante of Russian President Vladimir Putin, Gerhard Schröder, sees “political failure” as the reason for the ongoing war in Ukraine. “No security architecture” was created after the end of the Cold War.

From the point of view of former Chancellor Gerhard Schröder, “political failure” led to the Ukraine war. Since the fall of the Berlin Wall and the end of the bipolarity between the Soviet Union and the United States, “we have not created a security architecture that reflects this changed situation,” said the SPD politician on Thursday at a conference in Kocaeli, Turkey. “And the war in Ukraine is one of the consequences of this political failure.”

Schröder is considered a longtime confidante of Russian President Vladimir Putin and is, among other things, chairman of the supervisory board of the Russian state energy company Rosneft.

Gerhard Schröder: Mistakes on both sides

Schröder went on to say that many mistakes had been made by both Russia and Western countries in recent years. According to Schröder, however, Russia’s security interests do not justify the use of military means. Schroeder also said that everyone should do everything in their power to end this terrible war.

The former chancellor has been criticized for years for his commitment to Russian state-owned companies – against the background of the Russian attack on Ukraine, the pressure on him is increasing. At the beginning of March, the SPD leadership and Chancellor Olaf Scholz had asked him to resign from his posts at Russian state companies.

Schröder traveled from the Turkish metropolis to the Russian capital at the beginning of March, where he spoke to Russian President Vladimir Putin. According to reports, he also met a Ukrainian delegation in Istanbul.

Klingbeil also sees former governments as responsible

In retrospect, SPD chairman Lars Klingbeil sees the Russia policy of earlier federal governments as questionable. “All parties who have taken responsibility must ask themselves whether they were on the right track,” said Klingbeil of “Bild am Sonntag”. There were clear warning signs, such as the Russian war against Georgia and the annexation of Crimea. “Yes, we all should have judged what happened in Russia differently.”

Klingbeil declared his friendship with former chancellor Gerhard Schröder (SPD), who, despite the Russian war against Ukraine, is maintaining his economic ties to Moscow, to be over: “What happened in the last few weeks is of course also a political break between Schröder and me.” Russian President Vladimir Putin is a war criminal. Putin bears the responsibility for this brutal war, the murdered people, the families torn apart, for all the criminal misery.
