After a speech on compulsory corona vaccination: Emilia Fester received death threats

Emilia Fester is new to the Bundestag – and caused a stir with her first speech. After her plea for compulsory vaccination, the youngest MP even received death threats.

Emilia Fester caused quite a stir with her first speech in the Bundestag. The Green politician has been in parliament since the elections last September and, at 23, is the youngest member of parliament. In the debate about compulsory vaccination, she had clearly spoken out in favor of it: “It is not the impertinence to be vaccinated, but not to be vaccinated,” said Fester.

Already during her contribution, she objected in the form of heckling from parliamentarians from the other parliamentary groups. The headwind in the social networks on the Internet was even stronger. There, Fester was insulted by many users and even received death threats, as she now told the “Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland”. “These weren’t the first death threats I’ve received,” said the politician.

She had “experienced the reactions it triggers when I speak out loud for something controversial”. Many critics had offended Fester mainly because of her young age. “Because of my age, I am denied having my own opinion – and above all the right to speak in the Bundestag,” Fester told the “Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland”. There have also been sexist insults against her.

Behind the hostilities, Fester sees a “right-wing mob” that not only attacks herself, but also her personal environment: “I’m a public figure, I chose it. But not my private and my work environment, and still the hate hits them too.” The politician, who secured a direct mandate in the Hamburg-Eimsbüttel constituency in the federal elections, also wants to take legal action against threats of murder and violence.

Emilia Fester: Was the Green MP on vacation after all?

In her speech to the German Bundestag, Fester reported on the effects of the pandemic and corona restrictions, especially on the lives of young people. “I haven’t been to college, I haven’t been abroad. I haven’t been to any museums or festivals. I haven’t even kissed anyone I didn’t know or celebrated my birthday. I was, damn it, not even in a club. Dancing, partying and all that I miss so much,” she said. This part of the speech in particular was critically questioned: in the summer of 2020, Fester reported on Instagram about her vacation in Denmark.
