High energy prices: Lindner: Relief package costs around 17 billion euros

The leaders of the traffic light parties have agreed on a relief package to cushion the burden of high energy prices. That will be expensive.

According to Finance Minister Christian Lindner, the relief package developed by the coalition leaders for the citizens will cost the federal government around 17 billion euros this year.

The FDP leader announced in the Bundestag that it would be part of the planned supplementary budget that he intends to present to the cabinet on April 27. With this update in the current budget process, only measures related to the Ukraine war should be financed.

Lindner accused the opposition Union of not arguing solidly. “If you ask for more from the CDU/CSU, then I understand that,” he said. “You can always ask for more. But if you ask, you have to say at the same time how you are going to finance it.” The Union, on the other hand, criticizes the debt on the one hand, but at the same time demands more money.

The leaders of the SPD, Greens and FDP agreed on a relief package on Thursday in view of the high energy prices. Among other things, a flat-rate energy price, a reduction in the energy tax on fuel for three months and help for families and low earners are planned. In addition, there are cheap tickets for buses and trains in local public transport for three months.
