According to the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA), the authorities in Germany recorded around 9,000 politically motivated crimes related to Corona last year. BKA President Holger Münch told the editorial network Germany (RND).
“A large part of this movement is obviously less concerned with the individual corona measures than with the question of whether this democratic constitutional state is the right system,” he said.
When asked whether the situation would ease when the pandemic ended, Münch said according to RND: “We assume that these people will look for a new field – for example, topics such as climate change would be conceivable, depending on the restrictions or Cost increases will be associated with it.” According to him, the BKA assumes “that we will continue to experience new highs in the area of politically motivated crime in the face of new social challenges”.
A few weeks ago it became known that politically motivated crime had reached its highest level since annual statistics were introduced in 2001. Increased crimes against people of Russian and Ukrainian descent
Against the background of the Ukraine war, the BKA in Germany recently also recorded hundreds of anti-Russian or anti-Ukrainian crimes. “There are crimes against both Russian-born and Ukrainian-born members of our society,” Münch told RND. “We are currently counting a good 200 such crimes a week – the majority of which are anti-Russian.” These offenses ranged from insults and threats to physical assaults. “It also comes to property damage, such as paint graffiti with the appropriate content.”
