In Afghanistan, the Taliban are taking more and more rights away from women and girls. Girls are only allowed to go to school up to the 7th grade. Women are no longer allowed to fly alone. And even in amusement parks, gender segregation now applies.
In Afghanistan, women are only allowed to board a plane if they are accompanied by a male relative. The Taliban leadership has instructed airlines to no longer allow women traveling alone on board, employees of the Afghan airlines Ariana Afghan and Kam Air told the AFP news agency on Sunday evening. The decision was taken after a meeting of Taliban officials, the two airlines and the immigration service at Kabul airport on Thursday.
The Ministry for the Promotion of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice said it had issued no such ban. However, the new measure was confirmed in a letter that Ariana Afghan’s leadership sent to airline staff after the meeting with the Taliban.
Women are no longer allowed on planes alone
“Women are not allowed to fly on domestic or international flights without a male relative,” the letter said, a copy of which AFP has obtained. Two travel agencies contacted by AFP also confirmed that they no longer issue tickets to women traveling alone.
“Some women who were traveling without a male relative were not allowed to board a Kam Air flight from Kabul to Islamabad on Friday,” an eyewitness told AFP. An Afghan woman who also has a US passport was banned from a flight to Dubai on Friday, another source said.
Protests against school ban for girls
Dozens of people have protested in Kabul against the decision by the militant Islamist Taliban to bar girls from attending secondary schools in Afghanistan. Video footage from local media showed dozens of women and girls demanding their right to go to school and work on Saturday.

Contrary to their promise, the Taliban had announced that schoolgirls from the 7th grade onwards would not be allowed to attend classes until further notice. According to the organizers, the demonstration against the school exclusion ended peacefully. In previous protests, the Taliban intimidated and harassed participants and journalists.
Gender segregation in amusement parks
In addition, amusement parks in the capital Kabul and the surrounding area may only be visited separately by women and men. This was announced by the Taliban Ministry for the Promotion of Virtue and the Prevention of Vice on Sunday. According to a timetable published by the ministry, women are allowed to enter from Sunday to Tuesday and only wear an Islamic hijab. Men are allowed to visit amusement parks from Wednesday to Saturday.
Since returning to power last summer, the radical Islamic Taliban have drastically restricted women’s rights in Afghanistan. In December, they issued a directive that women could only take long car trips if they were accompanied by a close male relative.
