How can Ukraine refugees be housed quickly? Berlin’s Governing Mayor Franziska Giffey sees a solution in modular apartments. “We urgently need these places,” said the SPD politician.
Berlin’s Governing Mayor Franziska Giffey advocates so-called modular apartments to accommodate refugees from Ukraine quickly.
Plans from 2015 and 2016 would be put back on the table if the Bundestag and Bundesrat decided on changes in building law, said the SPD politician in an interview published by rbb. Of the 60 projects at that time, 27 were realized, so 33 are still open.
“In my opinion, we have to realize this modular design,” said Giffey. “We can initially use them to accommodate refugees, but in the future these will all be apartments for trainees or students. We need these places badly.” Modular construction means that prefabricated units are assembled on site to form apartments. This speeds up construction.
