Bundestag: SPD, Greens and FDP want special session for flood relief

Actually, the members of the Bundestag do not want to meet again until September 7th. But the calls for a special meeting in view of the flood disaster are getting louder.

After the flood disaster, especially in western Germany, a special session of the Bundestag is more likely. In the meantime, the FDP, the Greens and the SPD are in favor of MPs coming out of the summer break in August in order to get help quickly for the people in the flood areas.

This would have to be requested by at least a third of the MPs, i.e. 237 MPs. The three parliamentary groups together have 299 seats.

In an interview published on Tuesday, SPD parliamentary group leader Rolf Mützenich also pleaded for a special session. “Now that it is becoming apparent that all the federal states will participate in a reconstruction fund together with the federal government, the SPD parliamentary group believes that the Bundestag should discuss the legal requirements during the summer break and make decisions quickly,” said Mützenich of the “Rheinische Post” .

The first parliamentary manager of the Green Group, Britta Haßelmann, welcomed the willingness of the SPD. “Then we should work together to ensure that this comes about promptly,” she told the German Press Agency in Berlin. “Why the CDU / CSU is apparently still hesitating is incomprehensible to me.”

The Bundestag must decide on a reconstruction fund for the people affected and the areas of the flood disaster, said Haßelmann. “After the emergency aid, the people affected by the disaster now need further support and planning security. Therefore, quick action and decisions by the Bundestag are indispensable. ” In addition, necessary climate protection and precautionary measures must be discussed.

Mützenich said: “In this situation we want to give the people, municipalities and service providers affected by the flood at least financial security.” Houses, roads, utilities and bridges need to be restored as quickly as possible.

The FDP parliamentary group even called for a special session this week, but this is hardly possible in terms of time. The liberals also want the further course of action in the corona pandemic to be debated.

Their first parliamentary managing director Marco Buschmann had written to his colleagues from the Union, SPD, Greens and Left as well as Bundestag President Wolfgang Schäuble (CDU) and said that a conference of prime ministers would not be enough for both topics. The prime ministers want to consult again on Tuesday next week.

More than 180 people died in the storm of the century a good two and a half weeks ago in North Rhine-Westphalia and Rhineland-Palatinate. The property damage is immense.
