Diplomacy: Lavrov holds talks on Ukraine and Afghanistan in China

Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine is a diplomatic balancing act for China. Now Putin’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov is traveling to the neighboring country for talks. Also on the agenda: Afghanistan.

Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has arrived in Tunxi in the south-eastern Chinese province of Anhui for his first visit to China since the start of the Russian war of aggression in Ukraine.

The occasion is two-day talks on developments in Afghanistan, which are also attended by representatives of the USA, neighboring countries and the Taliban government that has been in power since August. As the Russian state agency Tass reported, Lavrov is already planning consultations with his Chinese colleague Wang Yi on Wednesday.

China is giving Russia political backing in the Ukraine conflict and is refusing to condemn the invasion. Rather, Beijing portrays the USA and NATO as the main causes of the crisis. The tensions overshadow the expanded troika meeting on Afghanistan, to which the host China invited the USA and Pakistan in addition to Russia. From the US side, the American special envoy for Afghanistan, Tom West, is to take part, according to Washington.

There is also a meeting of the foreign ministers of Afghanistan’s neighboring countries, who will then also meet with the Taliban government. The incumbent Afghan Foreign Minister, Amir Chan Muttaki, is traveling to this end. Other participating countries are Iran, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.
