Nord Stream 2: Manuela Schwesig clears “error” a

After a six-week break due to illness, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania’s Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig is back on duty – and immediately admitted to mistakes in handling the Nord Stream 2 Baltic Sea pipeline.

Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania’s Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig (SPD) has described her years of support for the Russian natural gas pipeline Nord Stream 2 as a mistake. From today’s perspective, the founding of the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Climate Protection Foundation, into which 20 million euros flowed from Nord Stream 2, was also a mistake, said Schwesig in Schwerin at her first public appearance after a six-week illness. “I too have made this mistake”, she admitted. It is good that Nord Stream 2 has now been stopped and that the foundation is to be wound up.

Nord Stream 2 not operational due to Ukraine war

The state government of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania has maintained close relations with Russia in recent years. One reason: the Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline reaches the German mainland in Lubmin in Western Pomerania. Nord Stream 2 should also land there. The line is finished, but not put into operation because of the Russian war against Ukraine.

It was clear that after the Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania’s relationship with Russia had changed, said Schwesig. “I stand by our dialogue with the Leningrad region (Administrative unit in Russia, editor’s note) have led.” It was about cooperation in business, science and culture. In principle, it is always good to be in dialogue, even with difficult partners. Putin destroyed this dialogue with his brutal war of aggression. The connections to the Leningrad region had been put on hold.
